Starting solids: a calm first-foods guide
When and how to start solids, without the pressure — readiness signs, first foods, and why milk still leads before one.
When to start
Around 6 months is the common window — but the calendar matters less than the signs. Look for good head control, sitting with support, interest in your food, and the fading of the tongue-thrust reflex. There's no prize for starting early.
How to begin
Start with one simple food at a time, offered when she's happy and not overtired. Purees or soft finger foods both work — follow her lead. Expect more exploring than eating for weeks; that's the point.
- Offer, don't push — she decides how much
- Introduce common allergens early and one at a time, per your pediatrician
- Keep milk as the main nutrition until 12 months
- Let it get messy — touching food is learning
'Food before one is just for fun'
Under a year, solids are about skills, flavors, and textures — not filling her up. Milk (breast or formula) still does the heavy lifting. Take the pressure off and enjoy the faces.
