Sleep
Sleep by age: wake windows without the pressure
Typical sleep totals, naps, and wake windows from newborn to toddler — as gentle ranges, not rules to fail against.
Why ranges beat rules
Sleep is the thing new parents ask about most, and the thing most likely to make them feel like they're failing. So here's the honest version: every number below is a wide range, and plenty of good days will fall outside it.
The rough shape, by age
- Newborn (0–3 mo): 14–17h total, 4–6 naps, 45–90 min awake between
- 3–6 mo: 12–15h, 3–4 naps, 90–120 min windows
- 6–9 mo: 12–14h, 2–3 naps, 2–3h windows
- 9–12 mo: 12–14h, 2 naps, 2.5–3.5h windows
- 12–18 mo: 12–14h, 1–2 naps, 3–4h windows
- 18–36 mo: 10–14h, 0–1 nap, 4–7h windows
About 'regressions'
The bumpy nights around 4, 8–10, and 18 months usually track with developmental leaps — brains busy building new skills. They're a sign of progress, and they pass. A steady, calm routine is your best friend through them.
